Storm

The recordings of this album began under a sweltering stuffiness of a late summer on bermuda, completed in a studio on snow-covered alpine altitudes near Woodstock and finally mixed in Manhattan on spring changed between extremely heat waves and storms with heavy rain, hail and snow. It was already clear wind and weather would not only influence the title of Heather Nova's fifth studio album.

Heather wanted to make such an album fairly long time before. An album on which songs, tone and production were linked together by consequently simplicity.

While listening to her favourite albums Heather striked on an idea to develop her songs in cooperation with another artist both as co-producer and also as musician; already her last two albums were made with colourful mixture of artists and producers.

Cause of the atmosphere gets across on the albums of Mecury Rev, they were the best choice. Both bands have met on tour last summer and had already recorded an album under the management of Heather's british label Big Cat Records. It was an idea like of a far past when music business still worked together with artists making music and not where contractual clauses nip such initiatives in the Bud or even musically cooperation between artists is initiated by their labels in hope of high sales.

... and so it's gone, the second part of the recordings happened in the Allaire Studios in several thousand meters height on a mountain near Woodstock where snow felt between 6 and 23 inches every day. If the album where a movie you would be confrontated with a composition of "The Blue Lagune" of the first half and of "Shining" of the second half.

The music flew free and quick, the "Divine Sparks" built up the desirable atmosphere, kept the production carefully and moreover supported two songs: "Storm" where Heather plays alone and "Evertime" with a solo of Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group who is a "fan" of Heather since several years.

According to Heather the songs on the new album could laxly be classified in two categories: such telling a story like "Fool For You" and "One Day In June", and such are only texture - landscapes, moments in flow of time - like "Aquamarine". Heather says: "If I have to give a summary of the album I would say it's about temptation, desires and blame. The title "Storm" points to the demand to keep situations to a decision with hope that problems could be solved - often out of emotional blockade. The weather conditions while the recordings surely have contributed the rest to the atmosphere of isolation felt on the record.

"Storm" will be released on 25th August, 2003. Heather will be seen with complete band on different European festivals in the second half of August to go on extensive European Tour from September till the end of November.
